Client challenge

A West African mining environment is characterized by demanding logistical, regulatory, and environmental constraints. The company needed to secure its sites and control the movement of personnel, contractors, and visitors, while ensuring reliable traceability of truck traffic from loading to the final destination. Beyond the risks of fraud (theft) and a diversion rate of 3% to 6% which could represent up to $40 million in annual losses for a typical operation employee safety was an equally critical issue: in the industry, approximately 65% of truck accidents are directly linked to driver fatigue, with severe human and financial consequences. The operator therefore needed to ensure business continuity while protecting its field teams not by increasing the number of service providers, but by relying on a single point of contact for design, deployment, and maintenance.

Solution delivered

Strat & IoT has designed an integrated, turnkey approach to access control and geolocation, structured around three key stages: an initial technical audit to accurately define requirements and prioritize critical areas and flows; a technical design phase defining the selected solution, including hardware, software, and implementation planning; followed by deployment, including training for local teams and an annual maintenance contract.

The solution addresses eight complementary dimensions: personnel access, management of areas with different levels of criticality, control of trucks and logistics flows, real-time monitoring, emergency management, service continuity, cybersecurity, and interoperability with the site’s existing security ecosystem.

It also incorporates driver monitoring through early fatigue detection, as well as load control, including weighing and automatic reconciliation between the theoretical and measured load, to ensure compliance and traceability of transported minerals from the point of loading through to the final destination.

Technologies used

  1. Secure badges (RFID/smart cards) and reading terminals at entry points and sensitive areas
  2. Automatic License Plate Recognition (LAPI/ANPR) connected to the weighbridge
  3. In-cabin camera for early fatigue detection (eye closure, blinking, head position)
  4. On-board GPS equipment and dynamic mapping with geofencing
  5. Weighing systems and automatic reconciliation of theoretical load versus measured load
  6. Central supervision platform (PSIM/security hypervisor) with unified dashboards
  7. Ruggedized IP65/IP66 equipment, designed to withstand high temperatures (>50°C) and offline operation
  8. Encrypted communications and administrator role management

Results achieved

  1. Logical segmentation of the site with logging of every access attempt and automatic denial in case of expired authorization
  2. Complete reconstruction of each logistics cycle, even with limited network coverage
  3. Immediate detection of any movement anomaly (route deviation, prolonged stop)
  4. Reliable tonnage reporting through automatic reconciliation of weighing records
  5. 70% reduction in the incident rate and 65.8% reduction in the average cost per accident, through early detection of driver fatigue
  6. Automatic roll-call functionality, significantly reducing verification time during an evacuation
  7. A single platform providing a unified view of risks across video surveillance, HSE, and logistics ERP systems

ROI & Business Impact

The business impact is driven by three key levers:

  1. Loss prevention: up to $39.4M/year in avoided losses through end-to-end traceability
  2. Availability: more than $61M/year in recovered production through equipment and fleet tracking
  3. Driver safety: 70% fewer incidents and 65.8% lower cost per accident through fatigue monitoring a human benefit first and a financial benefit second.
